fuse: the merge of past & present

Artist Statement:

Vintage objects have an allure that has always captivated me — from clothing & technology to random trinkets. These objects offer more than just aesthetic appeal; they embody history & carry stories. The craftsmanship & attention to detail found in these pieces (particularly when compared to today’s mass-produced items) speaks to a time when quality was fully embraced.

My artistic journey through undergraduate studies focused on creating flawless, high-resolution imagery. However, I discovered that incorporating vintage technology into my workflow introduced compelling imperfections, which I learned to embrace. Simultaneously, it challenged the pursuit of perfection that I was encouraged to achieve in my early
classes.

Fuse consists of various abstractions that explore fundamental design elements such as color, texture, and form, all central to my design process. For this work, I primarily used softwares including Blender, 3D Substance Sampler & After Effects. These platforms allow me to experiment with procedural & computational processes such as photogrammetry, geometry nodes, & time distortion. All of these methods demonstrate how contemporary software has transformed the way we create, enabling new & sophisticated approaches that were once either highly labor-intensive or impossible.

Fuse emerged from this intersection of past & present. This work deliberately contrasts contemporary digital techniques & software with analog technology, breathing new life into obsolete technological artifacts. Through this blending, I establish new workflows for myself that center around honoring traditional methods while embracing modern capabilities. This work not only acknowledges our technological heritage but also demonstrates how far we’ve advanced, examining what’s possible when old meets new.
